Scaling & Root Planing

Recommended for those with advanced gum disease, scaling and root planing is performed in two different steps, ensuring that one’s teeth and gums are thoroughly cleansed of any bad bacteria. We will start by removing plaque and tartar from each tooth and around the gumline, even going deep within the gum pocket if necessary. We’ll then move on to root planing and smooth out the roots of teeth so that bacteria will be unable to reattach in the future. This will also encourage gums to reattach to teeth and begin healing properly.
Laser Gum Treatment

When the gum tissue surrounding teeth is infected, we will use our PerioLase dental laser to perform a gingivectomy. This process targets the diseased tissues, effectively removing them while leaving healthy tissues alone. The use of the dental laser allows for minimal bleeding and swelling because of its optimal precision. It also cauterizes the area, minimizing post-operative discomfort and bleeding, and speeding up the recovery time.
Antibiotic Treatment

Antibiotic treatment for gum disease is often used in combination with scaling and root planing and/or laser therapy. The reason is that pockets of bacteria can spread to crevices that cannot be reached with traditional and even more advanced instruments. Fortunately, with Arestin, this antibiotic is applied to the gum pockets so that it begins to disperse over time, effectively killing any remaining bad bacteria. This results in tissues healing and gum pockets closing.
