What Are Dental Implants?

Made of titanium and designed to look like small screws, dental implants are custom prosthetics that fit within the jawbone and act like natural tooth roots. Their material allows them to easily fuse with the surrounding bone and tissues, establishing a firm base that can support a dental crown, dental bridge, or denture. Their placement encourages continuous stimulation so that bone loss does not occur, nor does facial collapse.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

From beginning to end, the dental implant process requires multiple steps that our team will follow to ensure success. Starting with the initial consultation, we will move on to dental implant surgery before a patient returns home to recover. Once osseointegration is complete, the metal abutments will be attached before the final placement of the custom restoration.

  • Initial Dental Implant Consultation – Meeting with Dr. Lundgren for an initial consultation is the first step. This visit will include a complete evaluation of your oral and overall health as well as a discussion about your smile goals and whether additional preventive or restorative treatments are required to create a healthier environment for your future dental implants.
  • Dental Implant Surgery – Depending on the case, implant dentist Dr. Lundgren will either place your dental implants in-house or refer you to a local oral surgeon. No matter the location, each implant will be positioned correctly within the jawbone so that it delivers maximum support for the future restoration.
  • Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – Complete recovery after implant placement can take 4-6 months, as osseointegration must occur. After the implants properly fuse with the bone, you will have your metal abutments attached to the tops of the posts so that your new restoration will remain firmly in place.
  • Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – The last stage of treatment is to receive your custom restoration. During your consultation, Dr. Lundgren will determine whether a crown, bridge, or denture is necessary based on the number of teeth you are missing.

When evaluating the benefits of dental implants to those of dentures or dental bridges, you will quickly learn that there is no comparison. These permanent prosthetics are uniquely designed and offer what no other form of tooth replacement can – full root-to-crown restoration. Additionally, those who choose to move forward with dental implants can expect:

  • Greater confidence because of the stability and permanence provided by dental implants
  • Optimal oral health since dental implants provide stimulation to the jawbone, lowering the risk of bone loss over time
  • Improved eating and speaking abilities, which leads to better nutrition and increased self-assurance
  • Teeth that are easy to clean and require no costly instruments or products to maintain
  • Teeth that look and feel natural, making it impossible for others to tell a difference between your real and artificial teeth
  • A smile that can last 30+ years or even a lifetime
